World Polio Day

Motion Number: S4M-11170

That the Parliament recognises 24 October 2014 as World Polio Day; thanks Rotary International for organising this day, which is dedicated to the global eradication of polio; celebrates Rotary International’s assertion that cases of polio worldwide have been reduced by 99% since 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) began; congratulates GPEI on what it sees as its success at reducing the number of polio endemic countries by 122 since its inception; laments that children in three countries, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria, are still affected by this completely treatable disease; supports Rotary International’s attempts to expose younger generations to the fight to eliminate polio through its extensive social media campaign surrounding World Polio Day, and hopes that this year’s World Polio Day will help to finally end the fight against polio.
