World Osteoporosis Day

That the Parliament recognises that 20 October 2014 is World Osteoporosis Day; welcomes this day dedicated to raising global awareness of osteoporosis and its prevention, diagnosis and treatment; notes that World Osteoporosis Day is organised by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), and that this year’s day marks the 15th annual event; acknowledges this year’s theme of men with osteoporosis; concedes that osteoporosis is often misunderstood as being a disease that is generally limited to affecting postmenopausal women; makes note of the IOF’s figures showing that one in five men over the age of 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture, and celebrates the global nature of World Osteoporosis Day, with activities being held in more than 90 countries worldwide.


World Sight Day

That the Parliament recognises 9 October 2014 as World Sight Day; welcomes this global day dedicated to raising awareness of avoidable blindness and rehabilitation; notes that World Sight Day is organised by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and appreciates the agency’s goal of a 25% worldwide reduction in preventable blindness by 2019; acknowledges that World Sight Day coincides with National Braille Week, an event organised by Royal Blind; supports those 285 million people worldwide who live with limited vision or blindness, which includes 180,000 people in Scotland, and acknowledges the global efforts to celebrate World Sight Day, including the IAPB’s event in Mexico City.
