Robot-assisted Prostate Surgery

Motion S4M-10359: Richard Simpson, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour, Date Lodged: 17/06/2014
Robot-assisted Prostate Surgery

That the Parliament understands that, although there are over 30 centres in England that offer robot-assisted prostate surgery, there are none in Scotland; believes that such surgery provides an innovative approach; understands that reviews have indicated that such an approach can offer significantly better outcomes than other methods; notes that the National Planning Forum is considering its introduction in Scotland and calls for at least one centre to be opened soon; believes that, while a close study of the outcomes of any such centre is vital, further research is not needed unless as part of a multi-centre study; shares Prostate Cancer UK’s view that, as in England, men in Scotland requiring a radical prostatectomy should be able to make an informed choice between robot-assisted and other forms of surgery on the NHS, and calls on the Scottish Government to make this choice a reality sooner rather than later.
