European Agreement on Transparency of Clinical Trials

Motion S4M-08961: Richard Simpson, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour, Date Lodged: 05/02/2014
European Agreement on Transparency of Clinical Trials

That the Parliament welcomes the agreement of a European Parliament committee and European governments to a deal that would ensure that pharmaceutical companies and academic researchers are obliged in future to make public the results of their European clinical trials; congratulates Glennis Wilmott MEP, who was the rapporteur on the clinical trials regulation, on her work on this issue; understands that these transparency requirements are part of wider legislation that will streamline the rules on clinical trials across Europe and facilitate cross-border trials to enable larger, more reliable trials as well as assist those studying rare diseases; notes that this agreement follows years of campaigning by health and consumer campaigners for more openness in medicine, and looks forward to the European Parliament approving the deal in April 2014.
