Motion S4M-09125: Richard Simpson, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour, Date Lodged: 24/02/2014
Silver Medal for the Men’s Curling Team

That the Parliament congratulates all the members of Britain’s men’s curling team on winning a Silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics; notes that the team was led by the skip, David Murdoch, and based itself at the sportscotland’s institute of sport in Stirling, where two of the members are from; believes that Stirling has a significant claim to become the national curling centre; considers that this success, along with the Bronze won by the women’s team, which was led by Eve Muirhead, has generated excitement; welcomes the taster sessions in curling for young people that have been put in place over recent years but recognises the challenges that the sport faces; believes that these were highlighted in a report on sporting facilities that was published in the last parliamentary session by the Health and Sport Committee; notes that £5.5 million was invested in curling by sportscotland and UK Sport over the four years leading up to the 2014 Olympics, and believes that similar such support will ensure future development and help maintain what it sees as Scotland’s pre-eminent contribution to British curling teams.
