Men’s Health Awareness Week

That the Parliament welcomes Men’s Health Awareness Week 2013, which is led by the Men’s Health Forum and runs from 10 to 16 June 2013; notes that it aims to tackle stigma in relation to men’s mental health and to promote their mental wellbeing and help-seeking; understands that 75% of all suicides and 73% of people who go missing are men; further understands that the MIND Research Institute found that 37% of men feel worried or low, with the top three concerns being job security, work and money; is concerned that more than one in five men is drinking at a potentially harmful level, and recognises the challenges in meeting the new Scottish mental health targets and, in particular, increasing the availability of support other than medicines.

Breathe Easy Week

That the Parliament welcomes Breathe Easy Week, which takes place from 10 to 16 June 2013; notes that this is a series of events throughout the UK in June each year, in which the British Lung Foundation’s (BLF) Breathe Easy support groups around the country help to raise awareness of a particular issue relating to lung disease; recognises the importance of topics highlighted in previous years including smoking, sleep apnoea and asbestos-related disease; welcomes in particular what it understands is the recent progress that has been made in relation to asbestos-related disease; notes what it considers the recent success of the Parliament in facing down a court challenge from the tobacco industry to introduce new measures of tobacco control but believes that it needs to go further; strongly supports the theme of Breathe Easy week 2013, which acknowledges the importance of the BLF support groups in sharing support, advice, experiences and friendship with people affected by lung disease, and encourages all MSPs to contact their local support group to make clear their support.
